Evaluation Study of Inflow Traffic Control by Ramp Metering on Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway

چکیده
Traffic congestion is a common problem; particularly in metropolitan areas. It is especially true for the Tokyo Metropolitan Freeway (MEX) which handles about 1.2 million vehicles per day. Thirty percent of these vehicles use the MEX central circular and radial routes causing chronic traffic congestion. A traffic-control center in Japan mitigates the congestion by governing access to MEX entrance ramps using empirical methods per 30 minutes; which is reasonable, albeit a static traffic-control strategy. Ramp metering is another effective and dynamic trafficcontrol strategy which is not yet implemented and is examined in this study.

Integrated Ramp Metering Design and Evaluation Platform with Paramics
Ramp metering has been recognized as an effective freeway management strategy to either avoid or ameliorate freeway traffic congestion by limiting access to the freeway. California has applied ramp metering widely in major metropolitan areas. Currently, California has three major ramp metering systems: San Diego Ramp Metering System (SDRMS), Semi-Actuated Traffic Management System (SATMS), and ...
متن کاملComparing Methods of Ramp Metering for On-Ramps to Improve the Operational Conditions at Peak Hours
This paper aims to evaluate and compare the effects of different methods of ramp metering on the operational conditions of traffic flow at three levels: the network level (including the freeway and its connected ramps), the entrance ramp, and the upstream segment of the entrance. To achieve this aim, one of the most important urban freeways in the metropolis of Isfahan was selected. The traffic...

The purpose of this study was to investigate traffic flow characteristics at off-ramp junctions in Iranian expressways. The study was conducted on the traffic behavior in isolated off-ramp vicinity of 6-lane expressways. The database consisted of traffic flow and traffic speed information extracted from videotapes. The relationship between diverging traffic flow in the right lane of expressway ...
متن کاملQuantifying effects of ramp metering on freeway safety.
This study presents a real-time crash prediction model and uses this model to investigate the effect of the local traffic-responsive ramp metering strategy on freeway safety. Safety benefits of ramp metering are quantified in terms of the reduced crash potential estimated by the real-time crash prediction model. Driver responses to ramp metering and the consequent traffic flow changes were obse...
متن کاملRamp Metering and Freeway Bottleneck Capacity
This study aims to determine whether ramp meters increase the capacity of active freeway bottlenecks. The traffic flow characteristics at twenty-seven active bottlenecks in the Twin Cities have been studied for seven weeks without ramp metering and seven weeks with ramp metering. A methodology for systematically identifying active freeway bottlenecks in a metropolitan area is proposed, which re...
